I ❤️ cake, & although I love any cake, I don’t so much love those modern scraped or barely iced cakes. Cake has a nice sponge but for me it’s always about the icing. My bday this year is a 2-cake affair: my friend and bad-ass pastry chef @alupchurch made what she called an “old lady cake,” which is the cake of my increasing far away “childhood dreams”: white cake with lots of buttercream frosting and flowers and frangipane. My friend and bad-ass pastry chef @kellymirabellebakery (sense a theme? 🤓) made a decadent three-layer devil’s food with banana pudding caramel of my “grown up dreams” and still lots of icing. These cakes, as well as the opportunity to do this work, travel with a fork, and get to know wonderful friends along the way, have exceeded any close-your-eyes-and-blow-out-the-candles dreams. Since the island is only accessible by ferry, Ep. 31’s @whitneyotawka uses this garden or mini-farm as a primary source of product when planning her daily, seasonal menus for the inn. The island and time to explore and Whitney’s food there is so special, and she has a cookbook coming out soon to celebrate it all! This is my annual Peach Crunch, fresh out of the oven in a vintage @lecreuset pan (which of course looks a little less for the journey after peach juice bubbled but will clean up pretty). The recipe is from #annmitchellthrash formerly the @postandcourier #foodeditor, and I told myself I wouldn’t make it this year. “It’s too much dessert for one person to have in her house, I can learn new recipes with 🍑,” I said, but the peaches are here and now so is the crunch.
